The Restored Gospel & Christian History Lesson 21 & 22

What is a cornerstone?

The dictionary defines a cornerstone as, "an important quality or feature on which a particular thing depends or is based."

Four Cornerstones of Faith

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Four essential cornerstones anchor the church

  1. Jesus Christ - Chief cornerstone
  2. The First Vision of the Prophet Joseph Smith
  3. The Book of Mormon
  4. The Priesthood, power of the priesthood and authority
Doctrine & Covenants 110:1-5, List the names Jesus introduces himself

  • I am the first and the last;
  • I am he who liveth
  • I am he who was slain;
  • I am your advocate with the Father.
Doctrine & Covenants 45:3-4,5

Listen to him who is the advocate with the Father, who is pleading your cause before him
Saying: Father, behold the sufferings and death of him who did no sin, in whom thou wast well pleased; behold the blood of thy Son which was shed, the blood of him whom thou gavest that thyself might be glorified;
Wherefore, Father, spare these my brethren that believe on my name, that they may come unto me and have everlasting life.
What is an advocate?

a person who publicly supports or recommends, a support, a person who puts a case on someone else's behalf, a defence
The Savior's title, Advocate with the Father, is one of my favorite titles. The Savior knows us perfectly, and is prepared, ready and waiting for us to call upon Him. Whatever we have done can be reconciled, and He is the One who pleads our case to our Heavenly Father, He reconciles us to our Heavenly Father. Repentance is possible because of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Alma 7: 11-13 teaches us how He knows us personally, and how His Atonement qualifies Him to be our Advocate.
11 And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.
12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.
13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me.
