Building an Eternal Family

Building an Eternal Family

What do you think of when you think of FAMILY? Some may have fond memories and feelings of their family and others may grit their teeth at the word. In this blog, I would like to discuss the purpose of Family and how we can improve our family experience. I hope that your testimony of the principles of the gospel regarding family will strengthen.

The Eternal Family

“From the beginning, God organized the human family and revealed that marriage and family relationships are intended to be eternal.” (Kudd. Successful Marriages and Families. 2010)

President Kimball says, “Eternal marriage was known to Adam and others of the prophets, but the knowledge was lost from the earth for many centuries”

The doctrine of eternal families is not a new concept. “Adam and Eve were sealed in marriage for time and all eternity, the time would come when the doctrine of the eternal family would be lost to mankind.” (Kudd. Successful Marriages and Families. 2010)

If mankind knew that family relationship may endure throughout eternity would we increase our effort to be the best individuals possible in our families?

In The Family: A Proclamation to the World, President Gordon B. Hinckley says, “the divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.”

The Plan of Salvation provides us with the way back to our Heavenly Father.

Plan of Salvation

  •       We lived with God before we came to earth
  • ·      We came to earth to gain a physical body and learn from our experiences. To choose between good and evil.
  • ·      We make mistakes and need a Savior to assist us on our path back to our Heavenly Father. Jesus Christ is the way back. He Atoned for our sins.
  • ·      Following God’s plan will bring happiness in our lives as we follow the Savior, Jesus Christ and live the commandments.
  • ·      When we die our life does not end. We will live with God and our families again.

Marriage and Family are part of God’s plan for us. In Moses 1:39 it says,

”Behold this is my glory, to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.”

I know we belong to an eternal family. Heavenly Father is our Father and we have families here on earth. We are to uplift and help each other in our families. Mothers and Father’s fulfill their divine roles by following the Savior and teaching gospel principles. We can restore good feelings in our families; we can forgive and be forgiven through the Atonement. The Plan of Salvation was created for us to succeed and become eternal families.
