The Restored Gospel & Christian History Lesson 15 & 16

This week's lesson I studied Elder Richard G. Scott's talk Truth Restored (Nov. 2005) and I would like to share with you some of the quotes from his talk.

"The Father’s plan of salvation and happiness … will help you overcome every challenge in life."

This promise came from an apostle of the Lord, Jesus Christ, and each of us need assistance through life's challenges. Heavenly Father has given us the Plan of Salvation that we may know why we are here upon earth, and our purpose. To know that He wants us to return to Him, and He has made this possible through His Only Begotten Son, Jesus Christ, who fulfilled the Atonement by willing suffering for each of us individually that He might know how to comfort us, forgive us, love us completely, and heal us. All of this that we may experience a mortal life, and gain experience, be tested, tried, and most importantly receive a testimony that Jesus Christ is our Redeemer.

I couldn't pick just a few quotes from Elder Scott's talk and feel like I should share the entire message in this blog. The truths taught in this message are true. Each of us is a child of God, loved by Him, and the way is prepared for us to return to His presence we just need to choose His path.

"All around us we see a growing desire for spiritual direction the world over as a result of increasing natural and human-caused disasters. This yearning for spiritual guidance is a consequence of our being children of a divine Heavenly Father. It is understandable that when we face difficulty we turn to our Creator for help. Our loving Heavenly Father knew that deteriorating world conditions, severe personal challenges, and disasters would lead His children to seek His spiritual nourishment. The challenge is how to properly find it.
We lived in the presence of God our Holy Father and His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, in a premortal existence. There we gained an understanding of the Father’s plan of salvation and the promise of help when we would be born as mortals on earth. The primary purpose of life was explained. We were told:
“We will make an earth whereon these may dwell;
“And we will prove them herewith, to see if they will do all things whatsoever the Lord their God shall command them;
“And they who keep their first estate [that is to be obedient in the premortal existence] shall be added upon; … and they who keep their second estate [that is, to be obedient during mortal life] shall have glory added upon their heads for ever and ever.”1
Those words express the most fundamental purpose of your being on earth. That purpose is to prove yourself obedient to the commandments of the Lord and thereby grow in understanding, capacity, and every worthy trait. It is to receive every required ordinance and to make and keep every needed covenant. It is to form and nourish a family. This experience includes having periods of trial and happiness, with the objective of returning triumphantly, having met well the challenges and opportunities of mortal life to receive the glorious blessings promised for such obedience.
So that the period of mortal testing and growth would yield its greatest benefit, you were taught and prepared for the circumstances you would personally encounter in mortality. Our Father’s pattern for guiding you through mortal life was explained. He would choose from among the most valiant, obedient spirit children prophets and other authorized servants to hold His priesthood, to be taught His truth, and to be guided to disseminate that truth among His children on earth. God would give each child moral agency, the right to choose His counsel or to ignore it. All would be encouraged but not forced to obey. You understood that while you could choose your path on earth, you could not determine the outcome of your choices. That would be decided by eternal law.
Should one live to qualify for all of the richest promised blessings but for reasons beyond his or her control not be able to obtain them on earth, there would be a compensating opportunity in postmortal life. Your memory of premortal life would be kept from you to assure that it would be a valid test, but there would be guidance given to show you how to live. Our Father’s plan for salvation in this life with the opportunity of returning to Him would be called the gospel of Jesus Christ.
From before the Creation of this earth, there was rebellion against our Father’s plan, instigated by a brilliant but evil spirit we know as Lucifer or Satan. He proposed a modification of the requirements. So convincing was his argument that one-third of the Father’s spirit children followed Satan and were cast out. They lost the extraordinary opportunity to grow and the critical advantage of a mortal body.
Our Holy Father, who knows each of His children perfectly, realized that over time many would be tempted, become worldly, and reject the testimony and teachings of His prophets. Spiritual darkness would replace the light of truth in a condition called an apostasy. The period from the introduction of truth to its general loss through sin would be called a dispensation. Prophet after prophet would be chosen in a series of dispensations to keep truth on earth for the faithful despite its distortion or rejection by many.
You learned that the Light of Christ would provide that guidance. It gives light and life to all things. It prompts all individuals throughout the earth to distinguish truth from error, right from wrong. The Light of Christ is not a person. It is a power and influence that comes from God our Father through His Son, Jesus Christ, and, when followed, can lead a person to qualify for the more definitive guidance and inspiration of the Holy Ghost. You were told that transgression would weaken the influence of the Holy Ghost, but it could be restored through proper repentance. You rejoiced to know that the obedient who would receive the proper ordinances with the necessary covenants and remain faithful would inherit celestial glory and live in the presence of the Father and His Son throughout the eternities.
How do we know these truths? How can you confirm their validity? You see around you great confusion regarding the nature of God, His teachings, and the purpose of life. How then does God, our Heavenly Father, guide His children on earth? How does He communicate truth and His will so that faithful, believing children can make the right choices and receive the blessings Heavenly Father wants them to have? I will explain.
From the foundation of this earth, God our Father has consistently followed His plan I have just described. Adam labored to share our Father’s plan with his children and descendants. Many believed and were blessed. But many chose to use their divine gift of moral agency to refuse His teachings and His gospel. The disobedient rejected the truth, distorted the teachings and ordinances, and distanced themselves from God. In time, the light of truth was replaced by spiritual darkness, and the priesthood and the true Church were lost among the people.
Prophets such as Enoch, Noah, Abraham, and Moses renewed the truth for their dispensation, but in time their efforts were rejected by most. In the meridian of time Jesus Christ, the Beloved Son of God, was born on earth. He restored the truth and ministered with love and compassion. He established His Church again on earth with apostles and prophets. Through intense suffering He fulfilled His Holy Father’s divine commission to become our Savior and Redeemer. He allowed Himself to be crucified. He was resurrected and overcame physical death. His infinite atoning sacrifice is a supernal gift that allows the repentant to be forgiven of sins and qualify for eternal life. But even so the Son of God was rejected by all but a few. His Apostles and Church members were persecuted and many killed. The earth sank into a long and dreadful period of intense spiritual darkness.
The scriptures record that throughout history, on occasions of exceptional importance, God the Father’s voice has been heard. On repeated occasions Jesus Christ has personally appeared to select individuals. Yet there is only one supernal, singular instance of which we have knowledge that God the Father Himself appeared in person. This was done with His precious Holy Son, Jesus Christ, to an audience of one. That one was young Joseph Smith Jr., an extraordinary spirit prepared before the foundation of the earth. He would become the greatest prophet sent to earth. About to come forth was the return of priesthood authority, the complete Restoration of the Church established by the Savior, with additional scripture required for our time provided by continuing revelation from the Savior.
Our benevolent Father came from His vast creations to this earth to clarify truth, to disperse the intense clouds of spiritual darkness, to establish His true identity, to restore a fulness of truth, and to provide the only way to obtain secure, spiritual guidance. This momentous Restoration began with the Father’s simple phrase “This is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!”2 There followed a Restoration of truth, priesthood, sacred ordinances, and the true Church, with the Father’s plan of salvation and happiness. When that plan is lived, it will help you overcome every challenge in life. It will help you qualify, through faith and obedience, to have the divine spiritual guidance you need. That support will give you the strength to live as you know you ought to live, no matter how world conditions degrade.
What occasion would be so stupendously important as to warrant this unprecedented visit of God the Father? It was to initiate the “dispensation of the fulness of times” foretold by prophets of the old and new testaments. The time had come for the Father to gather “all things in Christ,”3 commit all the keys of the kingdom, and restore the knowledge communicated in past dispensations4 as He established the final dispensation of the gospel for this earth.
Knowing that it would be difficult for many to believe that such a glorious Restoration did occur, the Savior provided a tangible witness to establish the truth of it, namely the Book of Mormon. The way to confirm the reality of the Restoration is described in its pages. Also, He provided additional illuminating scripture needed for our time in the Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price through Joseph Smith. No wonder so much of Joseph Smith’s ministry is focused on the Savior, His Atonement and doctrine.
While this precious, vital message has been proclaimed across the world, Satan has been most effective in causing people to ignore it or to look in the wrong places for it. The vast majority of Father’s children have not only forgotten their Father in Heaven and the purpose of mortal life, but they rarely even think of Him nor ponder for what purpose they are here in mortality. They have been led to be absorbed by mundane things that distract them from the essential ones. Don’t you make that mistake.
As a servant of Jesus Christ, I testify that what I have described is true. It is not sufficient to have a vague understanding of truth or the reality of the Father and His Son, our Savior. Each of us must come to know who They really are. You must feel how very much They love you. You must trust that as you consistently live the truth the best you can, They will help you realize the purpose of your earth life and strengthen you to qualify for the blessings promised. To be obedient to the commandments of God requires an understanding of them. It necessitates faith in them. That comprehension is best obtained through personal study of doctrine. That is one of the reasons that in July of this year, President Hinckley and his counselors invited all members to read the Book of Mormon by the end of the year. They promised, “Those who read the Book of Mormon will be blessed with an added measure of the Spirit of the Lord, a greater resolve to obey His commandments, and a stronger testimony of the living reality of the Son of God.”5 I have tested and proven that promise in my own life and have confirmed its truth. If you have conscientiously obeyed that counsel, you know what I mean. If you have not yet begun, there is still time to have your life enriched by reading the pages of the Book of Mormon. Please do it.
As an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ, I solemnly testify that God our Father and Jesus Christ through Joseph Smith brought to pass the Restoration I have described, that the resplendent light of truth and the Church of Jesus Christ are again on earth, that the true nature of God the Father and His Son has been again revealed, and that the proper way to receive spiritual guidance has been clarified. I testify that God’s plan of salvation has been made available to all who will honestly seek it. Embrace it. Live it for your peace and happiness. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen."

The Restored Gospel & Christian History Lesson 13 & 14

From this week's lesson...

Elder L. Tom Perry's talk, God's Hand in the Founding of America, he says

"I look around me and find some very definite signs of the decay that is beginning to occur. Corruption, crime, dishonesty, immorality, pollution, laziness, devotion only to special interests—these are signs that precede the fall of great civilizations. We see so much evidence of these signs before our eyes. Yet I realize the promise that has been given to us in this great land of America. I also remember the prophecies concerning our great responsibilities to preserve that which we have been blessed with by God. The Lord has promised to sustain the truth in this land.

Our commitment to America has been testified to by many, but I will point out to you special witnesses who have indicated our responsibilities to this land.
First from Brigham Young, second president of the Church: “Will the Constitution be destroyed? No: it will be held inviolate by this people; and, as Joseph Smith said, ‘The time will come when the destiny of this nation will hang upon a single thread. At that critical juncture, this people will step forth and save it from the threatened destruction.’ It will be so.” (Journal of Discourses, 7:15.)
Now another witness, John Taylor, third president of the Church: “When the people shall have torn to shreds the Constitution of the United States, the elders of Israel will be found holding it up to the nations of the earth, and proclaiming liberty and equal rights to all men, and extending the hand of fellowship to the oppressed of all nations.” (The Gospel Kingdom, Deseret Book Co., 1943, p. 219.) This is part of the program.
A final witness is from George Q. Cannon, former member of the First Presidency, who said that “the day will come when the Constitution and free government under it will be sustained and preserved by this people.” (JD, 23:104.)
Now, I declare to you that if we are not in the beginning stages of the fulfillment of this prophecy, we are at least in the stages where we are preparing for its fulfillment." https://www.lds.org/new-era/1976/07/gods-hand-in-the-founding-of-america?lang=eng
A preparation took place over time to usher in the Restoration of the Gospel, and we now are preparing for the Second Coming of our Savior Jesus Christ. There are prophecies that need to be fulfilled, however, each of us needs to prepare ourselves, our families, and our world for this event. Preserving our religious freedom is something I have heard the brethren speak of many times recently and I will continue to ponder how I can do that in my sphere of influence. I believe everyone has agency to choose how they worship, and no one is more important than another. No group should receive more consideration than another. There are blessings in store for all who follow God and are obedient to His laws.

The Restored Gospel & Christian History Lesson 11 & 12

"And I did read many things unto them which were written in the books of Moses; but that I might more fully persuade them to believe in the Lord their Redeemer I did read unto them that which was written by the prophet Isaiah; for I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit and learning."        1 Nephi 19:23
There were many who contributed to the preparing for the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Reformers who sacrificed, and would not deny their beliefs in God and died in the cause.
"Following the Crucifixion of Christ an apostasy occurred. Leaders began to “teach for doctrines the commandments of men.”4 They lost the keys of authority and closed themselves off from the channels of revelation. That lost authority could not just be repossessed. It had to be restored by those who held the keys of authority anciently.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is not a remodeled version of another church. It is not an adjustment or a correction or a protest against any other church. They have their “form of godliness”6 and their goodness and value.
John the Baptist returned through the veil to confer the Aaronic Priesthood, “which holds the keys of the ministering of angels, and of the gospel of repentance, and of baptism by immersion for the remission of sins.”7 A companion ordinance, confirmation and the conferral of the gift of the Holy Ghost, required a greater authority.8
Soon thereafter, Peter, James, and John, Apostle companions of the Lord, restored the higher or Melchizedek Priesthood9—“the Holy Priesthood, after the Order of the Son of God.”10
The Restoration did not come all at once. In a series of visitations, other prophets came to restore the keys of the priesthood.11
With the authority restored, the organization was revealed. Apostles were ordained, and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and First Presidency were organized as they had been anciently.12 The ordinances were revealed and authority given to perform them.
The Book of MormonAnother Testament of Jesus Christ was translated and published. In it is “the fulness of [the] everlasting gospel.”
" President Boyd K. Packer "The Standard of Truth Has Been Erected"
Once the Priesthood was restored, and proper authority given, the Book of Mormon was translated. This teaches me that preparations needed to be made prior to the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. We needed Priesthood keys, authority, and a living prophet to have God reveal to us His will, and scripture. I know Joseph Smith saw Heavenly Father, and His Son, Jesus Christ. Joseph Smith fulfilled what God wanted him to do, and it was all that we might have God's truth revealed, to make it possible to have all the ordinances available to us for our salvation, and that our families may endure forever.

The Restored Gospel & Christian History Lesson 9 & 10

Article of Faith #8

We believe the Bible to be the word of God as fas as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.

Sometimes, we read this article of faith and could focus too much on the negative and question the Bible's truth. The Bible is the word of God, and if there are errors they are the errors of man. As scripture is translated, some left out truths intentional or unintentional, it changes truth.

The Book of Mormon is the word of God, and I know this because I have read it, and have felt the power of God in my life as I read, study and apply the teachings found in the Book of Mormon. I have written this before, but when I was about thirty I had a great desire to know God, and become close to Him. I needed His guidance in my life, and just prior to me reading the Book of Mormon, I read this portion from the Introduction of the Book of Mormon,

"Concerning this record the Prophet Joseph Smith said: “I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”

This quote is what started my yearning to learn from the Book of Mormon, and to come to know my Savior, and His Atoning sacrifice.

In Doctrine & Covenants 1:24 is says,

"Behold, I am God and have spoken it; these commandments are of me, and were given unto my servants in their weakness, after the manner of their language, that they might come to understanding."

When we take the time to read scripture, you open yourself to feel the Holy Ghost teach you, comfort you, and guide you. You can hear the voice of the Lord and my testimony strengthens. You can follow the correct path when you learn what God wants and what is correct.

Elder D. Todd Christofferson says this of scripture in his talk, The Blessing of Scripture:

"The scriptures enlarge our memory by helping us always to remember the Lord and our relationship to Him and the Father. They remind us of what we knew in our premortal life. And they expand our memory in another sense by teaching us about epochs, people, and events that we did not experience personally. None of us was present to see the Red Sea part and cross with Moses between walls of water to the other side. We were not there to hear the Sermon on the Mount, to see Lazarus raised from the dead, to see the suffering Savior in Gethsemane and on the cross, and we did not, with Mary, hear the two angels testify at the empty tomb that Jesus was risen from the dead. You and I did not go forward one by one with the multitude in the land Bountiful at the resurrected Savior’s invitation to feel the prints of the nails and bathe His feet with our tears. We did not kneel beside Joseph Smith in the Sacred Grove and gaze there upon the Father and the Son. Yet we know all these things and much, much more because we have the scriptural record to enlarge our memory, to teach us what we did not know. And as these things penetrate our minds and hearts, our faith in God and His Beloved Son takes root."

We learn of the things of eternity when we study the scriptures and words of the living prophets. In another class, I was asked to read an article by Elder Dallin H. Oaks and there is a quote that resonates with me. When we read the scriptures we change, our perspective is enlarged.

As we mature spiritually we come to see things previously unseen. Arthur Henry King describes the process:
We look at a picture throughout our lives, we listen to a piece of music throughout our lives, we read a book time and again throughout our lives, as we should do—especially the scriptures—and it is different each time. Something else comes in. We see something else there that we never saw before, because we are a different person each time we experience a work of art. (The Abundance of the Heart [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1986], p. 259.)

The scriptures do not change, but what we can see changes in them because we have changed.    The same thing happens with the teachings of Church leaders and with personal experiences that     mean nothing to the "natural man" but are of eternal significance to the person by whom they are "spiritually discerned." - The Pure in Heart, 1988

We all want to feel our Savior's love in our life, and when we read the scriptures, we can feel Him near and the Holy Ghost will testify of its truth.

The Restored Gospel & Christian History Lesson 7 & 8

Internal Apostasy: Rejection of the Gospel and the Apostles & The Holy Bible

A few weeks ago while I was serving in the temple, it became clear to me how important it is to be trained and re-trained as an ordinance worker. It would be easy to overlook things or things may get changed without specific instruction and to keep the ordinances pure. The scriptures teach us truth, and if we follow the truth there is less opportunity to err.

In 1 Timothy 1:1-7 we read,

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour, and Lord Jesus Christ, which is our hope;
Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine,
Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith: so do.
Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good conscience, and of faith unfeigned:
From which some having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling;
Desiring to be teachers of the law; understanding neither what they say, nor whereof they affirm.
To me, our hearts should always be prepared to receive instruction, and with a humble heart strove to follow the Lord according to His word and His servants. I have witnessed people struggle to follow God, and the prophets instructions, and it would be good to examine how we feel when we are being instructed. Are there principles that you just don't agree with and don't want to follow? This can lead to personal apostasy.
A talk comes to mind as I ponder how to avoid Internal Apostasy. Elder Robert D. Hales spoke of Obedience in his talk, "If Ye Love Me, Keep My Commandments"
There are a few types of obedience:
1. "natural man's obedience" - "in which we disobediently reject God’s law in favor of our wisdom or our desires or even popularity. Because this is widely practiced by so many, this perversion of obedience diminishes God’s standards in our culture and in our laws."
2. "selective obedience" - claiming to love God and honor God while picking and choosing which of His commandments and teachings-and the teachings and counsel of His prophets-they follow.
3. "the Savior's obedience" - motivated by true love for Heavenly Father and His Son. When we willingly obey, as our Savior did, we cherish the words of our Heavenly Father.
Obedience is a way to keep focused on the path of righteousness, and with a willing mind and heart follow the Lord. Our testimony of the Savior, Jesus Christ, and His mission is a key to preventing personal apostasy. We need to work at receiving a testimony and nourishing it.
One of my favorite scriptures Alma 7:11 - 13 shares what our Savior did and how His Atonement benefits each of us.
"11 And he shall go forth, suffering pains and afflictions and temptations of every kind; and this that the word might be fulfilled which saith he will take upon him the pains and the sicknesses of his people.
12 And he will take upon him death, that he may loose the bands of death which bind his people; and he will take upon him their infirmities, that his bowels may be filled with mercy, according to the flesh, that he may know according to the flesh how to succor his people according to their infirmities.
13 Now the Spirit knoweth all things; nevertheless the Son of God suffereth according to the flesh that he might take upon him the sins of his people, that he might blot out their transgressions according to the power of his deliverance; and now behold, this is the testimony which is in me."
When we have received and embraced a testimony of the Savior, Jesus Christ, His mission and His gospel, our testimony will guide us, protect us, and strengthen us and those around us. It is a sure prescription to avoid internal apostasy.

The Restored Gospel & Christian History Lesson 5 & 6

Just finished a weekend of General Conference listening to the talks from our prophets, seers and revelators.

I am always inspired when I listen to our modern-day prophets speak the will of the Lord, and this weekend again, I felt the Holy Ghost testify to me that the messages are true.

We need prophets to guide us, teach us and correct us. This week's institute's lesson again reaffirmed to me the need for prophets, and why apostasy followed when ancient prophets were killed.

Matthew 24: 9 -13 says,

"9. Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all            nations for my name’s sake.
10. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13. But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved."

In ancient times there was a price to be paid when you supported a prophet or christianity.

We learned of Polycarp, bishop of Smyrna, responsible for many christian conversions. He was captured by the Romans integrated, threatened to be thrown to wild beasts, and burned at the stake for not renouncing his faith.

While my account is very brief, Polycarp was a man of courage who defended his faith in God, and would not deny God. He was burned at the stake and he said, " God's will be done," (www.christianitytoday.com

How will you and I follow the prophets, and apply their messages to our lives without being ashamed?

I can improve on how I righteously defend my faith by living the gospel principles, knowing the doctrine, and following the prophets.

In class we were asked, How will you approach the messages of General Conference differently? What are some personal goals you could make for yourself to ensure you take advantage of the restoration of the apostleship?

My thoughts were to recognize that priesthood authority & power have been restored to the earth, and we have prophets today. When I listen to our apostles speak, I can remember they speak the will of God. I can be mindful of the duty and responsibility they hold. I can prepare to hear the messages both as they are spoken, and to study, ponder and apply their messages. Be prayerful, and enjoy hearing their words. I feel comfort, and the presence of the Holy Ghost as I listen, and read their messages. It is a sense of refuge for me, and I often receive personal revelation as I make the effort to hear them speak. Making sure I am free from distraction so my heart and mind can pay attention.

Below is a picture of the Apostles, Prophets, Seers and Revelators called in our day.
